The Bell Tower of Seville Cathedral
Destination Description
The Giralda is the iconic bell tower of Seville Cathedral, located in the heart of Seville. Standing tall at 104 meters, it is one of the city’s most famous landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Giralda is a masterpiece of cultural fusion, combining Islamic architecture from the 12th century with Renaissance additions from the 16th century. For visitors, it offers both a journey through history and spectacular views of the city.
History of the Giralda
The Giralda was originally built in the 12th century as the minaret of the Great Mosque of Seville under the Almohad dynasty. Its design was inspired by the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech. After the Christian Reconquest in the 13th century, the mosque was replaced by the Seville Cathedral, but the minaret was preserved and converted into a bell tower.
In the 16th century, Spanish architect Hernán Ruiz II added the Renaissance belfry, which houses 24 bells and is crowned by the famous bronze statue El Giraldillo, symbolizing Faith. This combination of Moorish and Renaissance elements makes the Giralda a unique architectural treasure.
Highlights of the Giralda
