A Brief History of Havana Cathedral

The Havana Cathedral was originally built by the Jesuits between 1748 and 1777, during the height of Spanish colonial influence in Cuba. Dedicated to Saint Christopher (San Cristóbal), the patron saint of Havana, the cathedral quickly became the spiritual heart of the city.

Over the centuries, it has also been tied to fascinating legends—one of the most famous being the belief that the remains of Christopher Columbus were once housed here before eventually being moved to Seville, Spain.

In 1982, the cathedral, along with the surrounding district of Old Havana, was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, solidifying its status as both a religious monument and a cultural treasure.
