Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Havana
Destination Description
Standing proudly in Old Havana’s Plaza de Armas, the Castillo de la Real Fuerza is one of the most important landmarks in Cuba’s history. Built in the 16th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered the oldest stone fortress in the Americas.
Today, it’s not only a reminder of Havana’s colonial defense system but also home to a fascinating maritime museum.
A Brief History of Castillo de la Real Fuerza
Construction: Began in 1558 and completed in 1577 under Spanish colonial rule. Purpose: Originally built to defend Havana from pirate attacks, although its location—too far inside the bay—made it less effective for that purpose. Symbol of Power: It served more as a residence for Spanish governors and a display of Spanish authority.
UNESCO Status: Recognized as part of Old Havana’s World Heritage designation in 1982.
Architectural Highlights
Massive Stone Walls: Built with coral rock and designed to withstand attacks.
Moat and Drawbridge: Classic fortress features.
La Giraldilla Statue: A bronze weathervane atop the tower, symbolizing Havana and one of the city’s oldest icons.
Watchtowers and Battlements: Offering views over Havana harbor.

Today, the fortress houses the Museo de Navegación (Maritime Museum), dedicated to Cuba’s naval history.
