History of Kavala

Kavala’s history stretches back to ancient times, when it was founded as Neapolis (“New City”) in the 7th century BC. It became an important port for the ancient city of Philippi, which was nearby.

During the Roman era, Kavala thrived as a key stop along the Via Egnatia, the great Roman road connecting Rome to Byzantium (modern-day Istanbul). Later, under Byzantine and Ottoman rule, the city continued to grow as a cultural and commercial hub.
